'Blades' skates to No. 1 at box office
The Will Ferrell parody takes in $33 million in the U.S. and Canada in its
opening weekend.

Will Ferrell has played an elf, an anchorman, a NASCAR driver and now an iceskater. What he rarely plays — at least when it comes to silly comedies — is second fiddle at the box office.
DreamWorks Pictures and MTV Films’ “Blades of Glory,” Ferrell's latest high-concept parody, skated off with an estimated $33 million in its opening weekend in the U.S. and Canada. DreamWorks spokesman Marvin Levy said the studio was on a roll with “Dreamgirls,” “Norbit” and now “Blades of Glory.”
“I like to think of this as our own triple axel,” Levy said.
Olympic silver medalist Sasha Cohen played a cameo role in the film.
The comedy bested another solid opener, the animated “Meet the Robinsons,” one of the widest releases of a 3-D movie in recent years.
“Blades of Glory,” distributed by Viacom Inc.’s Paramount Pictures, averaged about $9,800 per theater in more than 3,300 engagements to easily rank No. 1. It also stars cult favorite Jon Heder from “Napoleon Dynamite” as Ferrell’s rival who becomes his unlikely figure-skating partner.
“Blades of Glory” opened below Ferrell’s hit from last summer, “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby,” which brought in $47 million for his biggest opening. But its launch was on par with the former “Saturday Night Live” star's earlier hits “Elf” and “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy.”
Olympic medalist: Skaters love 'Glory'
April 1, 2007
The Chicago Tribune
As we prepared to talk movies with Sasha Cohen last week, we were thinking "Borat." Then we found out it wasn't Sacha Baron Cohen but Sasha Cohen, the Olympic figure skater. "I get that a lot when I'm making reservations," she tells us.
Cohen, 22, has a cameo in "Blades of Glory" and hits the United Center on May 6 with "Champions on Ice." She says the figure skating community totally supports Will Ferrell's farcical "Glory." "There are a lot of true stories in the movie," Cohen said. "Of course, they make fun of it because skating tries to have this positive, proper image. But we're interesting people and we like to have fun too."

Sasha Cohen has seen a lot during a skating career that has already earned her two trips to the Olympics and several to the World Championships.
But Sasha said she couldn’t have foreseen the story line in “Blades of Glory”.
Rival figure skaters Chazz Michael Michaels (Will Ferrell) and Jimmy MacElroy (Jon Heder) go ballistic in an embarrassing, no-holds-barred fight at the World Championships. They are stripped of their gold medals and banned from the sport for life. They find a loophole, three-and-a-half years later, and are allowed to compete as partners – in pairs figure skating.
“I think the movie is hilarious,” said Sasha, who has a cameo role in the film. “I had a lot of fun with it and nobody took anything serious. Skating is so competitive and serious that it’s great to have a little fun with it.”
“Blades of Glory” will be released March 30.
Sasha will be doing some promotions with Paramount Studios leading up to the film’s release.
Paramount is hosting a “Blades of Glory” skating promotional stunt in conjunction with radio station KIIS FM and Xbox on March 22.
Sasha is also scheduled to participate in several radio interviews.

Did you know?
Will Arnett
The Canadian-born Arnett, like many actors, first credited part didn’t have a name—he played “Weather Video Guy” on the little known movie “Ed’s Next Move” (1996).
Amy Poehler
Poehler is best known for her stints on the popular Saturday Night Live since 2001. She is married to Arnett – her partner in “Blades Of Glory.” She said in the March 18 edition of Parade: “I play a Sonja Henie/Tonya Harding mix—a class act but ruthless and Will plays my somewhat-befuddled brother.”
Jenna Fischer
Enrolling in her mother’s class at age six, Jenna met fellow student Sean Gunn, who was the same age. Years later, Gunn went on to star in “The Gilmore Girls,” and Fischer stayed in touch, eventually marrying his brother, James Gunn, a writer and director.
Craig T. Nelson
Craig is most associated as Hayden Fox, the hard-boiled but good-humored tough guy head coach of the Minnesota State Screaming Eagles, on the popular long-running sitcom “Coach” (ABC, 1989-97). Nelson was the voice of the superhero Mr. Incredible in Disney/Pixar's “The Incredibles” (2004),
Bob Corddry
Bob moonlighted as a museum security guard, Romany Malco. As a teen Romany formed the rap group R.M.G., and upon relocating to Los Angeles, the crew signed a deal to Virgin Records. The group's name was changed to College Boyz and their first big hit, "Victim of the Ghetto," went to No. 1 on the rap charts.
